Learning Styles
I learn best by listening and visual demonstrations. I find it easier to retain information if it is spoken to me, and I am able to perform it in a hands-on matter.
Interpersonal Skills
I feel that I work easily with other coworkers and people outside of my school and profession. I find it easy to have conversations with individuals with whom I have never met and who are different from me. I feel that my involvement in various organizational committees and working in the food service industry has fostered these skills.
Communication Skills
For an individual to be a strong communicator, they must be a good listener and observer. I feel that this is extremely important in the healthcare field and in occupational therapy specifically because of the nature of our interactions with our patients. I consider myself to be a good listener and very observant. I find it easy to sense other’s emotions by listening to what they are saying and observing their facial expressions.
Self-management Skills
Once I feel confident and competent in an area, I am a very independent worker. I tend to ask questions or research until I feel confident in activities I am performing. I am able to manage my time efficiently to complete assignments and deadlines.
Work Values
In my workplace, I value change and variety. I find myself easily bored if I am doing the same activities day after day.
I believe it is important to incorporate evidence based practice in my treatment sessions with clients. New research is being performed everyday, and it is to our clients’ benefit to give them the newest and most up-to-date treatment techniques.
The reason many Occupational Therapists go into this field is to help others. I feel that it is very rewarding to see progress in a patient or for them to verbalize that you have helped them in some way.
I feel that all of these variables working together, allow me to bring a part of myself to my job and allow me to effectively use my “therapeutic use of self” to better help my patients.
